Former U.S. President Donald Trump has announced that a group of wealthy investors is ready to purchase TikTok, the popular video-sharing app owned by China’s ByteDance.
In an interview with Fox News, Trump said,
“We have a buyer for TikTok… very wealthy people. I’ll name them in about two weeks.”
The potential sale follows growing pressure from U.S. lawmakers, who have raised national security concerns about TikTok’s data handling. Many are pushing for a ban or forced sale of the app’s U.S. operations.
Trump also suggested the deal might need approval from Chinese President Xi Jinping, adding,
“I think President Xi will probably approve it.”
Legal Deadline for TikTok Sale Extended Again
A U.S. law requiring TikTok to be sold or face a ban was originally set to take effect in January. However, Trump has issued several extensions, with the latest pushing the deadline past June 19 to allow more time for negotiations.
Although Trump previously supported a ban, his tone has shifted. He now acknowledges the platform’s role in helping him reach younger voters during the 2024 campaign.
“I have a little warm spot in my heart for TikTok,” he admitted.
China’s Involvement Remains Key
ByteDance confirmed it is in talks with the U.S. government but noted that any sale would still be subject to Chinese law.
With over 2 billion users worldwide, TikTok continues to be a dominant force in global tech—and a focal point in the ongoing U.S.-China tech standoff.
