A fatal road accident claimed the life of a truck driver on Thursday evening along the Sagamu-Ijebu Ode Expressway, underscoring the dangers of speeding on Nigerian highways.
According to a traffic report shared by Babatunde Akinbiyi, spokesperson for the Ogun State Traffic Compliance and Enforcement Agency (TRACE). The tragic incident occurred around 6 p.m. near the Babcock slope.The crash involved a blue Fiat truck with registration number AAA 176 YA.
Preliminary investigations by law enforcement suggest that the truck driver, who was reportedly speeding. Lost control of the vehicle, causing it to veer off the road and plunge into a ditch. Unfortunately, the impact was fatal. The driver died on the spot while the second occupant, a motor boy, sustained serious injuries.
Responding swiftly, operatives from the Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) rescued the injured passenger. Also transported him to Ikenne General Hospital for medical attention. Meanwhile, the driver’s body was taken to the Olabisi Onabanjo University Teaching Hospital (OOUTH) morgue.
This incident highlights the persistent issue of speeding and reckless driving on major roads across Nigeria.
In a related development earlier this week. The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) confirmed another horrific accident along the Lokoja-Obajana Road. Where no fewer than 19 lives were lost and eight individuals sustained varying degrees of injuries, including burns and fractures.
