As part of her 55th birthday celebration, the First Lady of Anambra State, Dr. Nonye Soludo, embarked on a state-wide medical outreach on Thursday, visiting major hospitals across the state to support patients and promote healthcare access.
Her visits covered Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University Teaching Hospital (Awka), Nnamdi Azikiwe University Teaching Hospital (Nnewi), and the newly-built General Hospital, Okpoko. The outreach, under her signature initiative, Healthy Living with Nonye Soludo, focused on offsetting medical bills, providing free surgeries, and offering eye care and health screenings for conditions such as hypertension, diabetes, malaria, and respiratory infections.
A Longstanding Culture of Giving
In a chat with reporters at Okpoko, Dr. Soludo emphasized that this mode of celebration reflects a personal tradition that predates her marriage.
“I’ve always celebrated with the sick, the poor, and the vulnerable—even as a single woman. Bringing joy to others is my greatest fulfillment.”
Rather than host lavish parties, she chose to connect directly with the needy, praying, singing, and offering words of encouragement along with cash gifts.
Encouraging Nigerians to Give Back
The First Lady urged Nigerians to embrace acts of kindness in their own way.
“Making someone smile doesn’t always cost much. Sometimes, your presence or attention is enough. We can all touch lives—one act at a time.”
She also praised hospital staff for their dedication, cleanliness, and patient care.
Governor Soludo Commends Wife’s Selfless Spirit
Later in the evening, during a modest gathering in Awka, Governor Chukwuma Soludo lauded his wife’s compassion and strength, describing her as “the engine that powers the home.”
“She chose to spend her day in hospitals supporting the needy. This isn’t just charity—it’s who she is. I am grateful for her heart, her values, and all she stands for.”
The governor added that the outreach was made possible through the support of public-spirited individuals committed to helping others.
