DURING BREAK
Immediately, the timekeeper rang the bell for break, and Jerry was so glad because he had long waited for the bell to ring. He wanted to know what was happening to the cheerful Sara and how he could help.
“Can we talk now?” he asked.
“5 minutes, remember…” Sara replied.
She left the classroom, moving towards the school hall, and Jerry followed.
INSIDE THE HALL
“So… what do you want to say?” Sara asked.
“Sara,” Jerry called, “what’s happening?” he asked.
“Nothing,” without waiting for him to finish what he was saying.
He continued, “This is not the Sara I knew, the always smiling girl. Where is she?” he asked. Immediately, she started crying. She really needed someone she could confide in and Jerry was the perfect person… she thought.
Jerry was speechless when he saw her crying. He never expected those words to make her cry. He gave her enough time to cry while hugging her. Then, he continued… “What is happening, Sara?”
She replied, “It’s my parents!!!”
“What happened to your parents?”
Jerry asks.
She explained everything to Jerry, which left him in awe. He wasn’t about to say anything for a long time. He needed to help, but a lot of thoughts were running through his mind. They heard the bell ring again, the break was over. They didn’t even have time to take their lunch, which was not important at the moment. After the close of school, Jerry followed Sara to her place. They talked about a lot of things, including what the principal said regarding the exam. She promised to spend her time reading instead of brooding over the problem at hand. Jerry assured her that he would also assist her in some difficult topics.
JERRY’S HOUSE
Jerry was deep in thought, brooding over what Sara said about her parents and the house. Meanwhile, Jerry’s father had been standing beside him for close to two minutes, but his son didn’t notice his presence. He called out to him, “Jerry! Jerry!! Jerry!!!” But there was no response from him. He tapped him on his shoulder, making him jump up at once.
What’s wrong? His father asks him. I have been standing here for close to 2 minutes, but you didn’t notice my presence.
Jerry looks at his father and asks, can I talk to you? Yes, you can, son… his father replied. Ever since Jerry’s character changed, he became so close to his father, and they have many things in common. Jerry explained everything to his father without hiding anything, including Sara’s scores dropping woefully. His father assured him that all would be well and that there is something that could be done about it. Due to the connection he had, he sent Mr. White’s name to the manager of the bank, telling him that he would pay the money and, in return, the house should be returned to Mr. White. Immediately after the call, he said to his son, it is done. I don’t want to ever see you brooding again, just your happy face…. The father said. Send my greetings to Sara, your beautiful friend, and I would love to see her one day… Mr. Martin said.
Jerry, out of excitement, contacted Sara who was crying her eyes out at home. He told her everything, but Sara didn’t believe it. She reassured him that she would get back to him when his parents returned.
SARA’S HOUSE
The family was having dinner when the father’s phone rang. It was the bank manager calling. His face turned pale because he wasn’t ready for any discussion or whatsoever. Sara used that opportunity to explain what Jerry had said to her parents. The father didn’t believe it but picked up the call when it rang for the second time.
From the other end, Miss Ada, the bank manager, congratulated Mr. White. Stammering, he asked her, ‘For… what?’ Miss Ada then explained everything to him, how Mr. Martin had paid off his debts. Mr. White thanked the manager and ended the call. He then asked his daughter, ‘Where does your friend live? We need to go there now.’
‘Now?’ Mrs. White asked.
‘Now,’ he replied. ‘Our debt was truly paid off, and we need to go and appreciate them. Moreover, I can’t wait until tomorrow.
“What!! Paid off…how? Mrs. White asked. Sara’s friend’s dad paid off our debt. He replied. Out of excitement, the wife went to the kitchen, brought out some foodstuffs, and they all went to Jerry’s place.
JERRY’S HOUSE
Jerry was amazed when he saw Sara and her parents at the door when he opened the door. He ushered them in, entertained them with juice, and went inside to invite his father concerning the August visitors. The family of Mr. and Mrs. White appreciated Mr. Martin and his son for their love and kind hearts. Mr. Martin explained further to them how Jerry was before he met Sara. He explained how his son’s joyous spirit changed everything in the house, including him and his perspective towards things. Mr. and Mrs. White used that opportunity to apologize to Sara for not being amazing parents in terms of care and attention. Mr. Martin was grateful to Sara and promised to be in touch. Sara’s family returned to how it was. Her parents realized that their daughter’s love saved them from shame.”
As a result of the peaceful home, Sara’s scores started improving gradually. As promised, Jerry helped her study. When the results of their examination were out, they both had an A in all subjects, making the school and the parents proud of them. Because of this, the State government awarded them a scholarship to study in any school of their choice.
Truly, when we show love to one another, it heals a lot of wounds.
