The Peace, Security and Development Initiatives (PSDI), a leading civil society organization, has called on Nigerians to cease politicising the country’s security issues. And instead support efforts aimed at restoring peace and ensuring national stability.
During a recent press conference in Abuja. Themed “Unholy Attempt to Politicise Security Challenges.” PSDI’s Publicity Secretary, Amechi Oyema, emphasized the need for national unity and cooperation in tackling the country’s growing insecurity.
Oyema acknowledged the continuous support of President Bola Tinubu towards the Armed Forces and other security agencies, ensuring they have the resources needed to effectively carry out their responsibilities. However, he expressed concern over certain politicians using the country’s security issues to further their own agendas. Which could potentially worsen the situation.
Referring to recent incidents. Oyema pointed out the contrasting reactions of a prominent politician to the killings of 16 hunters in Uromi and the massacre of 60 villagers in Plateau State. He argued that the politician’s selective condemnation of security measures revealed a tendency to politicise these tragedies.
He also criticised the attempts to downplay the success of the military in the rescue of retired Brigadier-General Maharazu Tsiga, former Director-General of the NYSC. Instead of acknowledging the positive role of the Armed Forces. Some chose to spread a narrative that tarnished their efforts.
Oyema warned that such actions could demoralize the soldiers who are working tirelessly to protect the country. He called on political figures to prioritize national security over partisan interests and lend their full support to the government’s efforts.
He also appealed to Nigerian youth to reject negative influences from politicians who exploit young people for their own gains. Oyema reminded the public that the military is capable of addressing the security challenges. But warned that those who cooperate with those seeking to destabilize the nation will face consequences.
Concluding with a quote from Brigadier-General Tsiga. Oyema urged all Nigerians to take responsibility for the country’s security. Stating, “We cannot wait for the government alone to act; we all have a part to play.” PSDI called for greater collective action to overcome Nigeria’s security challenges.
