Former Senate President, Bukola Saraki, has declared that the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) is united again. He described the outcome of the party’s 100th National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting as a win for the PDP and Nigeria’s democracy.
Tensions Defused Despite Police Disruption
The meeting held as planned, despite a police disruption at the PDP National Secretariat the day before. Party leaders gathered and agreed to work together. They resolved to put aside their differences and focus on peace.
A Turning Point for the PDP
In a statement issued after the meeting, Saraki said the gathering could have gone either way. “It could have been a breaking point,” he said. “But our leaders chose unity. Today, there is no victor and no vanquished. The PDP is the winner.”
He also said the meeting helped preserve Nigeria’s democracy. “Without a vibrant opposition, democracy dies,” Saraki added.
Leaders Choose Peace Over Division
Saraki praised the spirit of reconciliation among party members. “All our leaders resolved to forget the past and rebuild trust,” he noted. “We agreed to rally together for a common goal.”
He stressed that the party must now focus on delivering good leadership. “We must meet the expectations of Nigerians who see the PDP as the best alternative.”
Pessimists Proven Wrong
Saraki expressed satisfaction with the meeting’s outcome. He said the decision to unite proves critics wrong. “Some thought the PDP was collapsing. But today, we showed them otherwise,” he said.
He also praised those who gave up personal interests for peace. “Many leaders made sacrifices. They shifted their positions for the good of the party.”
Next Steps: Convention and Rebuilding
Saraki said the next NEC meeting is scheduled for July 23. The party will also begin preparations for its National Convention.
He thanked members across the country for standing firm. “Let us keep this momentum going,” he urged. “Together, we will make the PDP stronger and ready to win future elections.”
