President Ramos-Horta of Timor-Leste has called on Nigeria to maximize its vast resources to strengthen its position in international trade, technology, and diplomacy. Speaking at a symposium in Lagos honoring diplomat Prof. Babafemi Badejo on his 70th birthday, he emphasized the need for Nigeria to assert itself on the global stage.
Ramos-Horta urged Nigerian leaders to shift from dependence on international aid and focus on self-reliance, economic growth, and innovation. He stressed that Nigeria must take charge of its development agenda rather than allow external forces to dictate its interests.
“Nigeria must define its interests, not have them dictated by others. A country with such vast resources should not rely on external aid that fosters dependency,” he said. He encouraged Nigeria to adopt a “Nigeria First” approach, similar to the “America First” policy, ensuring that national resources and policies prioritize self-sufficiency and sustainable growth while maintaining global cooperation.
The president also praised Prof. Babafemi Badejo, recognizing his significant contributions to governance, diplomacy, and nation-building. He highlighted Badejo’s role in restoring constitutional order in Guinea-Bissau and acknowledged his deep insights into political and economic affairs.
Badejo, reflecting on his career, expressed his commitment to furthering intellectual discourse. “There is so much I need to write, from the peace process in Somalia to Nigeria’s federal character and development challenges,” he said. The symposium emphasized the importance of political engagement and national interest in shaping Nigeria’s future.
