Security operatives disrupted nationwide protests organized by the Take-It-Back Movement on Monday, sparking outrage from rights groups. Demonstrators were protesting the state of emergency in Rivers, economic hardship, and alleged misuse of the Cybercrime Act.
In Abuja, Lagos, and Port Harcourt, police used tear gas and roadblocks to disperse protesters. Arrests were made, including activist “Flagboy.” Amnesty International condemned the crackdown as violating the right to peaceful assembly.
In Lagos, protesters were blocked from submitting their demands to the State Assembly. The government cited a court ruling restricting protests to two parks Ojota and Ketu.
In Port Harcourt, live bullets were fired into the air, and at least one protester was injured. Journalists were temporarily detained and had equipment seized.
Protest leaders vowed to continue their efforts and warned of a larger demonstration in August if demands weren’t met.
