The Lagos State Government has raised concerns after revealing that 26,592 public school students failed the 2024 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE). This represents a failure rate of 45.7% out of 58,188 students, despite the government paying ₦1.577 billion in WAEC fees on their behalf.
Speaking at the 2025 Ministerial Press Briefing, Commissioner for Basic and Secondary Education, Jamiu Tolani Alli-Balogun, expressed concern and announced new measures to address the issue.
To ensure accountability, the ministry carried out biometric verification, confirming 56,134 students as eligible for WAEC sponsorship in 2025.
As part of its intervention, the government launched the Eko Learners’ Support Programme on January 14, 2025. This initiative aims to improve academic performance by broadcasting 320 video lessons across 10 core subjects, including English, Mathematics, and Science.
Each 30-minute episode airs on Lagos Television and is also available on platforms like YouTube, Facebook, Instagram, and X, making learning more accessible for all students.
“This programme supports academic excellence and ensures every student can reach their full potential, regardless of background,” Alli-Balogun stated.
