Davido, the Nigerian Afrobeats superstar, believes Nigerian culture is making waves globally.
“We’re not just popular in music,” he told AFP in Paris. “We’re influencing fashion, food, and film worldwide.”

Afrobeats Influence: “I Like It”
Some critics claim Western artists are copying Afrobeats. Davido doesn’t mind. “I like it,” he says. “It’s a compliment.”
For him, music is universal. “In Nigeria, we do hip hop and R&B too. I don’t see any problem with that.”
Nigerian Culture Goes Global
As African music gains global popularity, Davido’s upcoming album “5ive” aims to cater to all audiences.
“It’s going to touch every part of the world,” he says. “We have music for everyone, French, Caribbean, American, and African.”
With over eight million monthly listeners, including fans like King Charles of the UK, Davido is leading the global Afrobeats charge.
Staying in Nigeria
Despite his fame, Davido believes Africa’s future lies with those who stay home.
“Everyone dreams of America. It’s cool to visit, but don’t leave your people,” he says, referring to Nigeria’s “japa” trend emigrating for better opportunities.
Despite economic challenges, Davido remains optimistic about Nigeria’s potential. “Nigeria is rich in talent and opportunity.”
Musical Roots
Davido grew up in a household filled with music. A cousin introduced him to the studio at 16, and he was soon producing his own tracks.
Influenced by Nigerian duo P-Square and global icons like Michael Jackson, Davido blends African beats with international sounds.
His hits like “Unavailable” and “Aye” have earned worldwide acclaim.
Music That Uplifts
Though Davido acknowledges Nigeria’s struggles, he prefers to inspire rather than focus on hardship.
“People want uplifting music,” he says. “I’ve sung about struggles before, but I talk about it more in Africa.”

Ahead of his world tour, Davido reflects on how African music is changing global perceptions.
“African music has changed the narrative,” he says. “We’re showing the world what Nigeria has to offer.”
