Former Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has declared unwavering support for the adoption of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) as the united platform for opposition forces ahead of the 2027 general elections.
In a statement shared via his X (formerly Twitter) handle on Thursday, Obi emphasized that the ADC-led coalition would always put Nigerians first in its decisions. He described the move as a necessary step toward rescuing the country through “competent, capable, and compassionate leadership.”
Obi Endorses ADC After ‘Deep Reflection’
Highlighting the urgency of the country’s challenges, Obi noted that the decision to unite under the ADC was not made lightly.
“This decision follows deep reflection on Nigeria’s current state and the urgent need for a new direction,” he said.
He reaffirmed his commitment to the coalition’s mission, adding that former Senate President David Mark will serve as the National Chairman, while ex-Osun State Governor Rauf Aregbesola will take the role of National Secretary.
A Call for Unity Across Opposition Lines
Obi stressed the importance of cooperation among all opposition groups to overcome Nigeria’s political and economic struggles.
“No one group can change Nigeria alone. To dismantle the structures of poverty and insecurity, we must build bridges, even when they are uneasy,” he said.
ADC Coalition Launched with Major Political Figures
The formal unveiling of the ADC as the coalition’s new political platform took place on Wednesday at the Yar’Adua Centre in Abuja. Key opposition figures—including former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, Peter Obi, and other party leaders—were present to endorse the unified front aimed at unseating President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in 2027.
The event also marked the announcement of David Mark and Rauf Aregbesola as interim National Chairman and Secretary, respectively.
Towards 2027: A Coalition with a Mission
With 2027 fast approaching, the ADC coalition seeks to offer Nigerians a credible alternative. The emphasis, according to Obi, will be on leadership that prioritizes public welfare, national security, and sustainable development.
