The Nigerian government has approved a new ₦77,000 monthly allowance for National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) members, but payments have yet to begin.
In January 2025, NYSC Director-General Brigadier General Yushau Ahmed announced that corps members would start receiving the increased allowance in February. However, reports indicate that they are still receiving the previous ₦33,000 stipend.
The delay has caused frustration among corps members, prompting them to demand an investigation. NYSC has attributed the delay to funding challenges and has not provided a clear timeline for implementation.
The prolonged delay has sparked widespread discussions on social media, with many corps members expressing disappointment and uncertainty about their financial stability. Some have called on the government to expedite the process, emphasizing the rising cost of living and economic hardship in the country.
Meanwhile, lawmakers and civil society organizations have urged the federal government to ensure transparency in the allocation of funds for the NYSC scheme. They stress that timely disbursement is crucial for maintaining morale among corps members and upholding the credibility of the program.
Despite reassurances from NYSC officials, corps members remain anxious, as no official date has been set for when the new allowance will be paid.
For now, while the allowance is approved, there is no confirmed date for its disbursement.
