Ms. Ogufere, Founder of Design Week Lagos, has emphasized the transformative potential of Nigeria’s creative and manufacturing industries in attracting investment and boosting economic growth.
Speaking at the Design Week Lagos Exhibition, themed “Building a Made in Nigeria Brand”, she highlighted the importance of local talent in driving innovation and self-sufficiency.
The exhibition showcased top Nigerian designers in furniture, product design, toy design, and doll-making, revealing the untapped potential within the industry. Ogufere stressed the need to shift focus from imports to locally produced goods that cater to Nigeria’s market needs.
“For too long, we have relied on imports that do not serve our needs. It’s time to embrace homegrown creativity and innovation,” she stated, urging government and financial institutions to invest in this thriving sector.
With 58 designers and 25 manufacturer-designer collaborations, the event highlighted how local partnerships can drive economic growth. Given that the global furniture industry alone is worth over $700 billion, Ogufere pointed out the vast opportunities available for Nigerian manufacturers.
She called on stakeholders to support the creative sector, emphasizing that design is a key pillar for economic development.
“Strategic investments in local manufacturers and designers will lay the foundation for sustainable growth and job creation,” she concluded.
By fostering local innovation, Nigeria’s creative industry has the potential to reshape the nation’s economy and establish itself as a global player in manufacturing and design.
