Nigeria will host the 7th African Spelling Bee (ASB) from April 9 to 13, marking the first time the competition will be held in a West African nation. Mr. Abdulsalam Ibrahim, National Coordinator of the Nigeria Spelling Bee, announced this in Abuja.
Founded in 2016, the ASB has previously been hosted by South Africa, Kenya, Uganda, and Malawi. The Nigeria Spelling Bee, under the Bee Spelling Competition Initiative, serves as the Local Organising Committee (LOC) for this year’s event, which is endorsed by the Federal Ministry of Education.
The ASB aims to promote literacy, academic excellence, and cultural exchange among young learners. According to Ibrahim, it fosters confidence, self-esteem, and interpersonal skills while celebrating Africa’s linguistic diversity. This year’s event will bring together top spelling champions from over 20 African countries, including Ghana, Kenya, Ethiopia, and Rwanda.
Nigeria has a strong record in the ASB, having won multiple championships. Defending Senior Champion Praises Minabowa and other Nigerian spellers are preparing to compete for top honors.
Set to be the largest edition yet, the Abuja event will feature spelling competitions, quizzes, and cultural exchanges, reinforcing Pan-African unity and educational excellence.
