Nigeria’s Super Eagles endured another disappointing result in their 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifying campaign, playing out a 1-1 draw against the Warriors of Zimbabwe at the Godswill Akpabio Stadium in Uyo on Matchday 6.
Last-Minute Heartbreak for Super Eagles
The Super Eagles were on the verge of securing a crucial victory until Zimbabwe’s Tawanda Chirewa struck in the 90th minute, capitalizing on a defensive lapse to snatch a point for the visitors.
Victor Osimhen had earlier put Nigeria ahead in the 73rd minute with a well-executed header from Ola Aina’s precise cross. However, Nigeria’s inability to convert their dominance into more goals proved costly in the dying moments of the game.
Missed Opportunities and Costly Errors
The match, played in front of a packed crowd at the ‘Nest of Champions,’ saw Nigeria control possession and create multiple scoring chances.
Tolu Arokodare, who replaced Samuel Chukwueze in the 59th minute, played a key role in Nigeria’s goal. Holding up play before feeding Aina, Arokodare helped orchestrate the chance that Osimhen expertly finished at the far post.
Nigeria had several opportunities to extend their lead. In the 83rd minute, Wilfred Ndidi squandered a golden chance after being played in by Moses Simon, sending his shot wide. Moments later, Osimhen, who had been a constant threat, was substituted due to cramp, with Victor Boniface coming on in his place.
Zimbabwe nearly equalized earlier in the 76th minute when Walter Musona’s shot rattled the crossbar following a mix-up in Nigeria’s defense. However, their persistence paid off in stoppage time as Chirewa found the net, denying the Super Eagles a much-needed three points.
Nigeria’s Position in Group C and the Road Ahead
With this result, Nigeria remains in third place in Group C, missing the chance to climb the standings. A late equalizer by Lesotho against Rwanda further complicated Nigeria’s qualifying hopes.
Upcoming Fixtures: Must-Win Matches for Nigeria
The Super Eagles will look to get their campaign back on track when they face Rwanda’s Amavubi at home on September 1 for Matchday 7. A week later, they will travel to take on group leaders South Africa in a crucial Matchday 8 encounter.
