In a bold move to preserve the integrity of Nigerian football. The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has initiated a strict crackdown on referees suspected of match manipulation. As the Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL), Nigeria National League (NNL), Nigeria Women’s Football League (NWFL), and the newly launched Nationwide League One (NLO) approach critical stages. The NFF is taking proactive steps to ensure fairness and transparency.
According to an internal memo signed by Mohammed Ameenu, Secretary of the NFF Refereeing Development Committee. All referees have been sternly warned to resist undue influence and maintain impartiality. With clubs and their agents reportedly seeking to sway decisions in their favor.
The federation has set up an independent monitoring committee to observe games and flag any suspicious conduct. The memo emphasizes that match officials are under close scrutiny, as most matches will be streamed live.
This means every decision made on the pitch is open to public judgment, raising the stakes for referees to act with integrity.Furthermore, the NFF made it clear that anyone caught engaging in match-fixing or compromising the rules of the game will face severe consequences. Offenders risk a minimum 10-year ban from football activities. And may also face legal action from security agencies.
In an effort to maintain the game’s credibility, the NFF stated: “Referees must uphold the principles of equity, fairness, and justice.” The federation is determined to protect the sport’s reputation and warns that any deviation from the rules will not be tolerated.
This decisive action sends a strong message across all leagues: the era of compromised officiating is coming to an end. The NFF remains committed to ensuring a transparent and competitive environment for Nigerian football to thrive.
