President Bola Tinubu has highlighted the vital role of sports in youth development, community engagement, and economic growth. Speaking at the inaugural Niger Delta Sports Festival (NDSF) in Uyo, he commended the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) for its commitment to using sports as a tool for empowerment and regional transformation.
The festival, organized by the NDDC to mark its 25th anniversary, has drawn over 3,000 athletes competing in 17 events across six venues. Represented by Shehu Dikko, Chairman of the National Sports Commission (NSC), Tinubu acknowledged the significance of the event in fostering unity and security within the region.
Sports as a Driver of National Development
“Sports is not just about competition; it is a powerful tool for youth development, community engagement, and economic growth,” Tinubu stated. “By investing in an event of this magnitude, the NDDC reinforces its commitment to empowerment, sustainable development, and deepening security within the region.”
He further emphasized that the festival aligns with the Federal Government’s broader sports reforms aimed at long-term economic benefits and talent development.
Akwa Ibom: A Sports Destination
Tinubu commended the Akwa Ibom government for hosting the festival, recognizing the state’s growing reputation as a prime venue for international sports events, particularly football. Governor Umo Eno urged athletes to uphold discipline and sportsmanship while encouraging Akwa Ibom’s team to strive for excellence.
Human Capital Development Through Sports
Minister of Regional Development, Abubakar Momoh, stressed that the festival underscores the NDDC’s role beyond infrastructure projects. “The Niger Delta is rich not only in natural resources but in human potential,” he said. “Sports instill discipline, perseverance, and teamwork—key values for a prosperous society.”
Momoh noted that beyond medals, the event promotes a healthier youth population and strengthens regional unity.
A Celebration of Culture and Talent
The festival’s opening featured cultural performances from the nine Niger Delta states and a ceremonial march-past by athletes. Alabo Iyaye, Chairman of the Main Organizing Committee, reaffirmed that sports can transform lives, society, and the economy.
With over 3,000 athletes showcasing their talents, the Niger Delta Sports Festival is set to drive sports development and economic growth in the region, further positioning sports as a key driver of national progress.
