At least 15 people sustained various degrees of burn injuries following a gas explosion. This rocked Ijora Badia in the Apapa Iganmu Local Council Development Area of Lagos State on Sunday afternoon.
The incident occurred around 4:10 p.m. in a mini shop stocked with several 25kg gas cylinders. According to a statement by Margaret Adeseye, Director of the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service. The shop, situated within a bungalow that also housed 15 self-contained rooms and seven additional shops, became the epicenter of the explosion.
Preliminary investigations revealed that the explosion was caused by a gas leak triggered by improper handling. The escaping gas reportedly ignited upon contact with a nearby flame, resulting in a sudden and powerful explosion.
“It was a case of poor handling of gas products, which unfortunately allowed gas to escape and come in contact with a flame. This triggered the explosion,” Adeseye explained.
Emergency responders, including personnel from the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, LASEMA, the Lagos Neighbourhood Safety Corps, and LASAMBUS, arrived swiftly at the scene. The fire was brought under control quickly. The remaining gas cylinders were safely evacuated, averting further disaster.
Fifteen individuals were reported injured, though none of the injuries were life-threatening. Many victims received first aid on-site, while others were taken to nearby hospitals for further treatment.
“No lives were lost in the incident, and normalcy has since returned to the affected area,” Adeseye confirmed.
The explosion has raised fresh concerns about gas safety and handling practices in densely populated areas. It also comes just a month after a deadly gas explosion on the Otedola Bridge along the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway. This claimed five lives in March 2025.
Safety Tips to Prevent Future Gas Explosions
Authorities are urging residents and shop owners to adhere to basic safety practices when handling gas cylinders:
- Always check for leaks before use
- Store cylinders in well-ventilated areas
- Keep gas away from open flames and electrical sparks
- Train staff and household members on emergency procedures
The Lagos State government continues to call for vigilance. Also proper safety measures in the storage and handling of gas products to prevent further tragedies. Investigations into the Ijora Badia incident are ongoing.
