Abeokuta burst into life on Saturday as the 2025 Lisabi Festival transformed the historic city into a vibrant hub of culture, fashion, and tradition. This year’s event, themed ‘Ègbáliganza 2025’, brought together Egba sons and daughters from around the world to honor their legendary hero, Lisabi Agbongbo Akala.
Lisabi, the revered warrior and farmer, is celebrated for leading the Egba people to freedom during their resistance against the powerful Oyo Empire between 1775 and 1780. His leadership ended Egba’s subjugation and tribute to the Alaafin of Oyo, setting the stage for their self-governance.
The 2025 festival was a spectacular blend of tradition and modern flair, proudly showcasing Egba’s identity. Much like the renowned Ojude Oba Festival celebrated by the Ijebu, the Lisabi Festival has become a cultural statement of unity, pride, and heritage.
Highlights of the event included energetic drumming, traditional dances, and colorful fashion parades featuring Ofi, Adire, and contemporary Afrocentric styles. The grand finale dazzled attendees as top dignitaries stepped out in regal Adire Agbada and fur-lined attire.
Notable guests included former President Olusegun Obasanjo, Ogun State Governor Dapo Abiodun, former Governor Ibikunle Amosun, PDP’s 2023 governorship candidate Ladi Adebutu, and veteran Nollywood actor Richard Mofe-Damijo (RMD), all of whom added prestige and star appeal to the celebration.
The cultural richness peaked with the majestic arrival of the Alake of Egbaland, Oba Adedotun Gbadebo, accompanied by high-ranking chiefs in traditional regalia, coral beads, and royal staffs—emphasizing the festival’s enduring significance in Yoruba history.
