Former Super Eagles midfielder and Olympic gold medallist Garba Lawal has advised Real Sociedad striker Sadiq Umar to focus on securing regular first-team football as uncertainty looms over his future at the La Liga club.
Speaking exclusively to Africafoot, Lawal emphasized that Sadiq’s current challenges at Sociedad stem not from a lack of talent but from a tactical mismatch. According to him, the club’s system does not favor a classic centre-forward like Sadiq.
“It’s not about his abilities. The team’s playing style doesn’t suit a traditional striker,” Lawal explained.
With Real Sociedad reportedly unwilling to send Sadiq on another loan, the club is now open to a permanent transfer. Both Elche CF and Turkish Super Lig side Samsunspor have shown interest, with Samsunspor already initiating formal negotiations.
Lawal, who has maintained close communication with Sadiq during his stint at Sociedad, believes the 28-year-old should move to a club that guarantees consistent playing time. He particularly recommended Elche as a promising option.
“Sadiq has the qualities to succeed. He still has goals in him. What he truly needs now is regular game-time,” Lawal said.
Reflecting on the striker’s past struggles, Lawal noted that he constantly encouraged Sadiq to remain resilient and prepared. He praised the forward’s work ethic and determination, traits that continue to define his career.
“I told him to keep working hard and stay ready. Football has its highs and lows,” he added.
Ultimately, Lawal insists that consistent play should outweigh the allure of a high-profile club. He believes that with the right opportunity, Sadiq can rediscover his form and deliver value on the pitch.
Sadiq remains under contract with Real Sociedad until 2028.
