Lagos State Government, in collaboration with WaterAid and other stakeholders, has launched a project to construct 350 public toilets across the state. This initiative aligns with the government’s commitment to promoting public health, environmental sustainability, and hygiene.
Lagos, Nigeria’s most populous city, faces significant challenges in sanitation due to rapid urbanization and inadequate toilet facilities. The United Nations Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 6 emphasizes access to clean water and sanitation for all, making this initiative crucial in tackling health risks associated with poor hygiene.
The Lagos State Government will construct modern, eco-friendly public toilets in high-traffic areas, markets, and transportation hubs to ensure easy access. These facilities will be properly maintained and managed through public-private partnerships (PPP).
Apart from building public toilets, Lagos is also improving access to clean water. The Adiyan Waterworks project is expected to generate over 100 million gallons of potable water daily, supporting sanitation efforts and reducing waterborne diseases.
The Lagos State Government and WaterAid’s commitment to constructing 350 public toilets is a major step toward achieving a cleaner, healthier city. By combining infrastructure, awareness, and regulation, this initiative will help Lagos attain the Open Defecation-Free (ODF) status while improving overall hygiene and sanitation.
