The Centre for Infrastructural and Technological Advancement for the Blind (CITAB) has called on the Lagos State Government to extend its groundbreaking disability empowerment program beyond the current administration. This initiative, which has already empowered 300 individuals with disabilities through targeted vocational training and start-up tools, is paving the way for increased financial independence and social integration.
The disability empowerment program, spearheaded by the Ministry of Wealth Creation and Employment, has equipped participants with essential skills for employment and entrepreneurship. Through hands-on vocational training, individuals are gaining the confidence and technical know-how to secure better job opportunities and build sustainable livelihoods. This initiative not only promotes financial independence but also drives community inclusion in Lagos.
CITAB highlighted the importance of adjusting teaching methods for blind individuals and those with learning disabilities. Unlike sighted individuals, these groups benefit most from step-by-step, real-time practical applications rather than solely theoretical or verbal instruction.
Institutionalizing the Initiative for Long-Term Impact
To secure the program’s future, CITAB has urged the Ministry of Wealth Creation and Employment to establish a dedicated committee focused on addressing the unique needs of disabled trainees.
