The Lagos State Government will fully ban the use and sale of single-use plastics (SUPs) starting July 1, 2025. This move aims to tackle environmental damage caused by plastic waste.
Background of the Plastic Ban
The announcement was made by Tokunbo Wahab, Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, during a visit from TETRA PAK West Africa Limited. Lagos had already banned styrofoam and some single-use plastics in January 2024.
Wahab explained the ban targets the harm caused by non-biodegradable plastics, especially styrofoam. The policy protects Lagos’ coastal environment and urban areas.
Why Lagos Is Acting
Lagos covers 3,575 square kilometers and holds about 10% of Nigeria’s population. It is below sea level and prone to flooding. Wahab said plastic pollution worsens these problems.
He said, “The ban is a necessary step. We gave one year to phase out single-use plastics after banning styrofoam.”
Enforcement and Compliance
Enforcement begins July 1, 2025. Officials have engaged with the Food and Beverages Recyclers Alliance (FBBRA), achieving 70% compliance so far.
Wahab urged producers to take responsibility. He said the phased ban is fair and reasonable.
Industry Support
TETRA PAK West Africa’s Managing Director, Haithem Debbiche, praised the ban and pledged support.
What Residents and Businesses Should Know
From July 2025, single-use plastics like bags, straws, and food packs are banned. The government encourages eco-friendly alternatives and recycling.
