The Kwara State Government has reaffirmed its dedication to eliminating tuberculosis (TB) through enhanced free treatment and specialized diagnostic services, including chest X-rays for children. This commitment was emphasized by the First Lady of Kwara State, Prof. Olufolake AbdulRazaq, during the 2025 World Tuberculosis Day commemoration at Kulende Market, Sango area, Ilorin.
Government’s Commitment to Free TB Treatment and Diagnosis
Represented by the Director General of the Ajike People Support Centre, Alhaji Abdulganiyu Opeloyeru, the First Lady urged residents to report suspected TB cases promptly for early treatment to prevent its spread. She highlighted the importance of community participation in TB awareness and encouraged both the Hausa and Yoruba communities in Sango to play an active role in ensuring timely case reporting.
Addressing the theme of the event, “Yes! We Can End TB: Commit, Invest, Deliver,” AbdulRazaq underscored the need for collective action between the government and the public. She stressed that early detection and prevention are crucial in saving lives and curbing the spread of the disease.
Legislative and Health Sector Support
In his remarks, the Chairman of the Kwara State House of Assembly Committee on Health, Seun Oguniyi, urged Sango residents to take full advantage of the government’s TB intervention programmes. He also reiterated his committee’s dedication to collaborating with the State Ministry of Health to eliminate quackery in the health sector.
Similarly, the Commissioner for Health, Dr. Amina El-Imam, represented by the Director of Pharmacy, Barakat Olanrewaju, reaffirmed the government’s readiness to work with stakeholders to ensure that TB diagnosis and treatments remain completely free. She announced that the state currently has 646 Directly Observed Treatment Short Course (DOTS) Centres across public and private health facilities, with plans to expand the number significantly to enhance accessibility.
Free Health Insurance Coverage for TB Patients
Dr. El-Imam also expressed gratitude to Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq for approving free health insurance coverage for TB patients and four of their family members. This initiative provides beneficiaries with access to treatments for various health conditions throughout the year, further reinforcing the government’s commitment to public health.
Community Engagement and Stakeholder Participation
The event witnessed active participation from key stakeholders, including the spouse of the Executive Chairman of Ilorin South Local Government, Hawawu Podo, Vice Chairman Mrs. Mary Abiodun, and community leaders. Their presence underscored the importance of collaborative efforts in tackling tuberculosis at the grassroots level.
With these proactive measures, Kwara State is taking significant strides toward eliminating TB, ensuring that quality healthcare services are accessible to all, and fostering a healthier community.
