Finidi George, Rivers United coach has declared that his team will not repeat the costly mistakes that denied them the Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) title last season. The Pride of Rivers, who finished runners-up to Remo Stars in the 2024/25 campaign, are now determined to mount a stronger challenge in the new season.
The Port Harcourt giants opened their 2025/26 NPFL season with a 1-1 draw against champions Remo Stars at the MKO Abiola Sports Arena last Friday. Although they did not secure a win, the result extended their dominance over the Sky Blue Stars. In fact, Rivers United have now won seven of their 12 encounters, while Remo boast only a single victory.
Reflecting on the fresh campaign, Finidi sounded confident about his squad’s readiness. “We understand where we slipped last season, and we won’t make the same mistakes again. This time, we will fight for every point,” he said with conviction.
The former Super Eagles coach emphasized that starting strong could shape their title ambitions. “If you begin well, it pushes the team to achieve greater results. Personally, I don’t feel pressure, but of course, the club expects good performances. From what we’ve seen in training and matches, I believe things will work out positively,” he added.
Rivers United ended last season with 64 points, just seven behind eventual champions Remo Stars. However, with Finidi’s guidance, the 2022 NPFL winners aim to rediscover their championship form.
Having joined Rivers United after a short stint with the national team, Finidi has quickly stamped his authority on the side. Now, with renewed focus and determination, he believes the Pride of Rivers are fully equipped to reclaim the league crown.
