The Federal Government plans to install 7,000 network towers to expand digital access to underserved rural communities. This initiative aims to bridge the digital divide and foster inclusive development across Nigeria.
Focus on Rural and Northern Communities
Minister of Communications, Dr. Bosun Tijani, revealed that about 20 million Nigerians, mostly in northern rural areas, currently lack network access. President Bola Tinubu has directed the ministry to prioritize these communities to ensure equal digital opportunities nationwide.
Pilot Project in Ibwa 2 Community
The pilot project, launched in Ibwa 2, Gwagwalada (FCT), will provide digital hospitals and schools benefiting over 12,000 residents. The initiative, in partnership with Globacom and Huawei, includes free WiFi and distribution of 125 smartphones to the community.
Driving Digital Healthcare and Education
Dr. Tijani demonstrated the project’s potential through live online consultations between medical and educational professionals in Abuja and Lagos, showcasing how digital facilities can improve access to essential services.
Industry and Community Support
Huawei’s Managing Director, Terrens Wu, emphasized the project’s role in rural transformation and financial inclusion. Globacom’s Northern Region Manager, Kassim Kaka, also reiterated their commitment to boosting digital literacy nationwide.

Ibwa 2 Village Head, Abubakar Bamaiyi, praised the government for delivering tangible results, highlighting improved learning and healthcare access as signs of renewed confidence in the administration.
