Technology advisor Akin Ibitoye has urged Nigerians to limit screen time to protect their eye health and improve sleep quality. Speaking on the News, Ibitoye highlighted the growing risks of prolonged exposure to screens, especially from phones and laptops.
He explained that constant screen use strains the eyes and can lead to long-term discomfort. A key issue, he said, is blue light, artificial light from screens that disrupts sleep by blocking melatonin, the hormone that regulates rest.
“Blue light is very harmful — it prevents you from sleeping,” Ibitoye warned.
To combat this, he recommended the 20-20-20 rule: every 20 minutes, look at something 20 feet away for 20 seconds. This simple habit helps reduce eye strain and improve focus.
Ibitoye also encouraged users to:
- Take regular screen breaks
- Use blue light filters
- Lower screen brightness
- Engage more in offline activities
He emphasized that eye wellness is just as important as physical and mental health, urging people to be more mindful of their digital habits.
