Former NYSC Director-General Maharazu Tsiga has shared his terrifying 56-day captivity after being abducted on February 5, 2025, in Katsina State. Rescued on Wednesday, he described being surrounded by hyenas the night before his release and facing threats from snakes and scorpions.
Tsiga revealed that kidnappers used hostages as human shields during aerial attacks. “They brought us out so aircraft would target us, but God was merciful,” he said. He also recalled a failed rocket explosion placed near him while he slept.
Believing officials had access to money, the kidnappers broke into Tsiga’s house using explosives. “They don’t fear God just money. But when they see aircraft, even their cows run.”
The hostages were fed only once a week, mainly Tuwo Dawa. “I have hypertension, and all they provided was salt. Now, I struggle to climb steps due to malnutrition and beatings.”
Tsiga emphasized that security is a shared responsibility. “We must contribute government alone cannot do it.”
Ambassador Gideon Yohana, also rescued, praised security agencies for their efforts and noted improvements in affected states.
Tsiga’s ordeal highlights the harsh realities of kidnapping in Nigeria, emphasizing the need for collective security efforts and continued government action.
