The Enugu State Government has announced the designation of 549 health facilities to provide free malaria treatment to residents. This initiative aims to combat the high prevalence of malaria in the state by increasing access to testing and treatment.
Dr. Ifeoma Otiji, Coordinator of the Enugu State Malaria Elimination Programme. She made this known during the Advocacy, Communication, and Social Mobilisation (ACSM) Core-Group Quarterly Meeting held in Enugu. The meeting brought together officials from various groups. These groups include: National Malaria Elimination Programme, civil society groups, traditional and religious leaders, media representatives, and healthcare professionals.
The discussion focused on malaria prevention, control strategies, and community engagement. Also highlighting the state’s dedication to eliminating the disease.
Dr. Otiji encouraged residents to visit any of the 549 designated health centres for free malaria testing and treatment. She emphasized that malaria remains a serious health threat. Mostly to pregnant women and young children, and should never be ignored.
“We ensure that anyone with fever is first tested. If the result is positive, treatment is provided immediately,” Otiji stated.She also noted that the government had improved the supply of anti-malaria drugs, ensuring that treatment is readily available at health facilities.
Dr. Nnenna Ogbulafor, National Coordinator of the Malaria Elimination Programme, acknowledged the efforts of the Enugu State Government but urged for greater commitment and collaboration. She highlighted that malaria remains a significant burden, particularly for children under five and pregnant women.
Meanwhile, Dr. Uchechukwu Okenwa, Director of Public Health and Disease Control in Enugu, stressed the role of community awareness in malaria prevention. He emphasized that engaging local communities is crucial in reducing malaria cases.
Mrs. Hope Obokoh of the National Malaria Elimination Programme urged residents to maintain clean environments, eliminate stagnant water, and clear bushes to prevent mosquito breeding. She explained that simple hygiene practices could significantly reduce the spread of malaria.
The Enugu State Government’s proactive approach to malaria elimination is a major step in improving public health. With free malaria treatment now accessible at 549 health centres, residents are encouraged to take advantage of these services. By combining medical interventions with community awareness and environmental cleanliness, Enugu is moving closer to reducing malaria cases and protecting its citizens.
