The Emir of Minna, His Royal Highness Faruq Bahago, has vowed to fully support the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF). In its campaign to tackle deadly diseases across Niger State.
The royal pledge came during an advocacy visit to his palace by a UNICEF delegation. The Emir assured the team that the Minna Emirate Council would mobilise resources. And communities to ensure the success of UNICEF’s health initiatives. He also urged the organisation to maintain its presence and momentum in the state.
“We have the people, and we must act in their interest. I will support and complement your activities in all four areas of intervention,” the Emir declared.
Leading the delegation, Dr. Gerida Birukila, Chief of the Kaduna Field Office, represented by Dr. Ahmed Tsofo, outlined UNICEF’s current health priorities in Niger State. These include eradicating polio, controlling cholera outbreaks, promoting exclusive breastfeeding, and introducing measles and rubella vaccines in October.
Dr. Birukila revealed troubling statistics 451 recorded cholera cases, with over 150 confirmed positive through rapid diagnostic testing, and 16 deaths. She emphasised that the active involvement of traditional institutions is essential for mobilising communities. Encouraging vaccine uptake, and ensuring the success of public health campaigns.
She added that UNICEF is working closely with the state government to contain the cholera outbreak, stop its spread, and strengthen preventive measures. The agency is also preparing for “in-between rounds” of the polio eradication campaign. And intensifying breastfeeding awareness during World Breastfeeding Week.
With the Emir’s backing, UNICEF hopes to boost community participation, accelerate vaccination coverage, and ultimately eliminate life-threatening diseases from Niger State.
