Liverpool forward Diogo Jota revealed the emotional significance of his last goal for the club just weeks before his tragic death in a car accident on July 3 in northern Spain.
Jota, 28, and his brother Andre Silva died when their Lamborghini veered off the road while he was returning to England for pre-season training. The Portuguese star had recently helped Liverpool clinch the Premier League title.
His final goal, the winning strike in the Merseyside derby against Everton in April was one he described as a proud moment after a difficult season. Speaking in the documentary Champions 24-25: The Inside Story, Jota said:
“It was a very tough season, but I kept fighting. That day, I could help the team, and I’m proud of that.”
Joining Liverpool from Wolves in 2020, Jota won the Premier League, FA Cup, and League Cup. He called his journey from Gondomar to Anfield a “remarkable achievement” and a dream come true.
In his honour, Liverpool have retired his number 20 shirt, commissioned a permanent sculpture outside Anfield, and celebrated his legacy with a mural near the stadium.
