Ajax Amsterdam has come under fire after brutally informing Chuba Akpom and six other players that they were no longer part of the club’s plans via a WhatsApp message. The Dutch players’ union, VVCS, condemned the move. Calling it an act of “improper employment” and a clear violation of professional standards.
In a strongly worded statement, VVCS criticized the club’s handling of the matter. Describing the WhatsApp dismissal as shocking and disrespectful. The affected players were reportedly excluded from all first-team activities without prior consultation. Instead, Ajax grouped them in a chat and informed them to start searching for new clubs.
Among those sidelined is former Arsenal striker Chuba Akpom, who joined Ajax in 2023 after a standout season with Middlesbrough. Despite netting nine goals in his first Eredivisie season. He was loaned out to Lille. And is now part of the club’s offloading list as Ajax begins a squad overhaul.
According to reports by De Telegraaf, the message came directly from technical director Alex Kroes. Not only have the players been banned from training with the first team, but they also face restricted access to club facilities.
They are now allowed to use the training pitch and gym only after the first-team sessions have concluded. Parking privileges have been revoked. Also just one physiotherapist has been assigned to attend to all seven players.
The list includes high-profile names such as Carlos Forbs, Borna Sosa, and Branco van den Boomen all signed under former director Sven Mislintat.
This development follows Ajax’s disappointing campaign. Which ended with them losing the league title to PSV. With new head coach John Heitinga taking charge, Ajax seems eager to start afresh. Though their methods are sparking serious controversy.
