For the first time, Africa Day will be celebrated in China. The event aims to showcase a vibrant and authentic image of Africa to a global audience.
Organized by the Center for China-Africa Discourse Studies, the celebration will take place on May 23, 2025, at the Marriott Hotel in Beijing. According to Communications Director Queen Modestus, the event is led by Africans living in China and promises to be the largest celebration of Black culture in Asia.
Strong Support from African Brands
Notably, the event has major backing. A leading Nigerian bank and the national airline of an East African country are among the top sponsors. Additionally, a well-known South African brand is expected to join. Several non-profits and pro-African organizations will also lend their support.
Hosting the event is Dr. Joseph Olivier Mendo’o, Head of the African Youth Delegation in China and one of the 100 Most Influential People of African Descent (2023).
Celebrating Africa’s Diversity
This celebration isn’t just cultural—it’s a statement. Often, Africa is wrongly viewed as one country. This event seeks to correct that by highlighting the continent’s diversity and richness.
Modestus noted that the initiative blends corporate support, academic insight, and community involvement. Pan-African foundations will also play a key role.
A New Annual Tradition
Looking ahead, organizers hope to make Africa Day in China an annual tradition. Ambassador Martin Mpana of Cameroon, Dean of the African Diplomatic Corps in China, is expected to speak at the event.
Finally, the day will feature a high-level panel discussion and a forum for African community leaders in China.
