Vice President Kashim Shettima and Chief of Staff Femi Gbajabiamila have arrived in London to retrieve the body of former Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari, who died on Sunday, July 13, at age 82.
The delegation, sent by President Bola Tinubu, also includes Foreign Affairs Minister Yusuf Tuggar and Borno State Governor Babagana Zulum. Buhari passed away around 4:30 p.m. after a prolonged, undisclosed illness.
Buhari’s Legacy and Return
Flags across Nigeria are flying at half-mast, and national prayers and burial rites are being prepared as Buhari’s body is set to return home for final honours.
A former military ruler (1984–1985) turned democratic president, Buhari’s political rebirth began in 1999. After failed presidential bids in 2003, 2007, and 2011, he won in 2015 through the APC merger, defeating then-incumbent Goodluck Jonathan.
He served two terms with Vice President Yemi Osinbajo, handing over power to Tinubu and Shettima in 2023.
