The Federal Polytechnic, Bauchi, has been closed indefinitely following a violent protest by students over rising insecurity on campus.
Trouble started early Tuesday when armed robbers reportedly attacked the male hostel around 2 a.m., injuring some students during the raid. Outraged by the incident, students took to the streets around 5:30 a.m., mounting roadblocks and lighting bonfires, which disrupted academic and commercial activities on campus.
Security operatives, including the Nigeria Police, were deployed to restore order. In a statement, the school management described the protest as a result of “justifiable frustration” but condemned the violence that followed.
Authorities alleged that hoodlums hijacked the demonstration and announced the immediate closure of the school, giving students two hours to vacate the premises. The institution will remain shut until further notice.
