Tension has gripped Akure, Ondo State, as farmers took to the streets on Wednesday, protesting the alleged killing of five people by suspected herdsmen in Aba Oyinbo, Akure North Local Government Area. According to reports, the attackers stormed the community in the early hours, opening fire on residents.
This tragic incident follows a similar attack just two weeks ago, where 14 people were murdered across four nearby communities Ademekun, Aba Pastor, Aba Sunday, and Alajido all within the same local government area. The escalating violence has sparked fear and outrage among residents, who now demand urgent action.
A large crowd of angry protesters marched to the Governor’s Office, chanting solidarity songs and urging Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa to take immediate action. One of the demonstrators, identified as Jonah, decried the rising death toll, alleging that the attackers infiltrated the state from Edo.
“We are being slaughtered, and no one is doing anything. Akure North is under siege. We are farmers, not criminals. We urge the governor, police, army, and Amotekun to intervene before more lives are lost,” he pleaded.
As of the time of reporting, security operatives had been deployed to the protest site to prevent any breakdown of law and order. However, the community remains on edge, anxiously awaiting the government’s response to the worsening security crisis.
