Super Eagles forward Ademola Lookman has described his switch from representing England to Nigeria as one of the most pivotal decisions of his life.
Speaking in an interview with ARISE TV, the 2024 CAF African Footballer of the Year revealed that the move transformed both his personal and professional journey.“Without a doubt, it changed my career and my life,” Lookman said. “This is my home. I’m the son of the soil.”Born in London, the Atalanta star played for England at youth level before committing his international future to Nigeria.
Since then, Lookman’s career has soared. His hat-trick in the 2024 UEFA Europa League final secured Atalanta’s first-ever European title, propelling him into the spotlight as one of Europe’s most in-form attackers.
Lookman credits his success to discipline, consistency, and relentless hard work. “Self-belief and daily dedication are what helped me grow,” he shared. “Even during the tough moments, like missing a penalty at Fulham, I never stopped improving.”
Winning the African Footballer of the Year award, he said, was a proud and humbling achievement. “It’s a blessing to join the list of African greats. I take that recognition with pride,” he added.
During a recent visit to Lagos, Ademola Lookman presented the CAF award to President Bola Tinubu and Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu. He also returned to his childhood neighborhood, Phase 2, reflecting on his roots.“This award belongs to Nigeria. Bringing it home was deeply meaningful,” he said.
Despite his achievements, Lookman is not slowing down. “Retirement isn’t in sight. There’s still much more to accomplish,” he affirmed.Now valued at €50 million, Lookman has attracted interest from top Premier League clubs including Arsenal, Chelsea, Liverpool, and Manchester United.With his current form, Lookman continues to prove that choosing Nigeria was the right call.
