Motorcycle riders in Obafemi-Owode LGA, Ogun State, say union fees and harassment are threatening their livelihoods.
Multiple Unions, Daily Levies
Riders in Magboro, Mowe, and Arepo allege they are forced to join several unions. Each union charges daily fees, even on days they don’t work. They are urging the Ogun State Government to step in.
High Annual Costs
Eze Emeka, a rider, said union tariffs rise every year. He spends nearly ₦200,000 annually. Stickers cost ₦5,000 each from four unions. Riders’ permits add ₦25,000–₦30,000 yearly. “I barely make ₦5,000 a day, yet we pay daily. There are no facilities or benefits,” he said.
Major Unions Involved
The unions named include:
- ACOMORAN – Amalgamated Commercial Motorcycle Owners and Riders Association of Nigeria
- AMORAN – Articulate Motorcycle Owners and Riders Association of Nigeria
- ROMO – Riders and Owners of Motorcycle Organisation
Sudden Levy Increases
Another rider, Epe Samson, said ticket fees jumped from ₦600 to ₦800 daily in 2025. Sticker prices rose from ₦3,000 to ₦5,000. Riders’ cards may soon cost ₦7,000. He added that a new union, allegedly government-approved, has worsened the situation.
Harassment and Assault
The riders allege fee collectors assault them to force payment. Appeals to union leaders have failed. Efforts to reach the Ogun State Commissioner for Transport, Olugbenga Dairo, were unsuccessful.
