The Nigeria Natural Medicine Development Agency (NNMDA) has developed 23 new herbal medicines. These include treatments for diarrhoea, peptic ulcers, and hepatitis B. The agency exceeded its yearly goal of 11 products, announced Prof. Martins Emeje, the Director-General, at a public event in Lagos.
Wide Range of Treatments Including Sickle Cell and Diabetes
The new medicines also target sickle cell disease, diabetes, immune boosting, and anti-aging. Some products were launched last year by the Ministry of Health.
Breakthrough Anti-Diarrhoea Medicine Wins National Award
A major achievement is the anti-diarrhoea herbal remedy, which won first place at a national scientific competition. Diarrhoea is a leading cause of child mortality in Nigeria. The government has allocated funds in the 2025 budget to further develop this medicine using nanotechnology.
Medicines Developed from Nigeria’s Rich Agricultural Resources
NNMDA’s work relies heavily on Nigeria’s agriculture. The agency produces medicines from plants, soil, marine life, insects, and fish spines, exploring new natural sources.
New Malaria Prevention Kit Launched
At the event, NNMDA also introduced a malaria prevention kit. It includes Amarus herbal tea and an anti-malaria mosquito repellent cream.
Addressing Hepatitis B and C in Nigeria
Hepatitis B and C remain major health concerns. The World Health Organization reports over a million deaths yearly worldwide from these viruses. Over 20 million Nigerians live with hepatitis B or C, with many unaware of their infection. NNMDA’s new herbal medicine aims to support treatment efforts.
