Senator Ali Ndume, representing Borno South, has urged President Bola Tinubu to declare a state of emergency on Nigeria’s security and economy sectors. On Friday, Ndume emphasized the need for the President to prioritize national welfare over political matters.
“Let the President forget about everything and concentrate on three things, security, the welfare of citizens, and the economy,” Ndume stated.
The lawmaker also criticized Tinubu’s recent declaration of emergency rule in Rivers State, calling it a misstep. On March 18, the President suspended Governor Siminalayi Fubara, his deputy Ngozi Odu, and all state lawmakers for six months due to ongoing political turmoil. Retired Vice Admiral Ibokette Ibas was appointed interim administrator.
Relying on Section 305 of the 1999 Constitution, Tinubu justified the move as a response to national danger.
However, Ndume said the crisis should have been resolved through dialogue rather than executive action.
“I feel that the President should have worked on bringing them together to solve the problem,” Ndume said, adding that political leaders did not defy Tinubu before the intervention.
