The Cross River State Police Command has taken swift action by dismissing Inspector Effiong Bassey. Following a tragic shooting incident in Calabar that left one person dead and two others injured. The incident, which sparked public outrage, prompted immediate disciplinary and legal steps from the police authorities.
According to a statement released on Monday by the Police Public Relations Officer, Irene Ugbo. The dismissed officer has already been charged to court and is currently remanded at the Afokang Correctional Centre. This move underscores the command’s commitment to accountability and justice.
Furthermore, Ugbo emphasized that the police did not abandon the victims or the deceased’s family, contrary to circulating reports. “From the moment the incident occurred, we provided financial assistance and ensured constant medical care for the injured victims,” she stated.
Additionally, police officers visited the University of Calabar Teaching Hospital to check on the wounded individuals. One of the victims, who sustained a gunshot wound to the neck, underwent successful surgery and is currently recovering.
Ugbo reiterated the command’s dedication to transparency, stressing that efforts are ongoing to support all affected parties. “We are fully involved in the welfare of both the deceased’s family and the injured victims. The public can rest assured that justice is being served,” she added.
She also addressed misinformation surrounding the incident, urging journalists to verify their reports before publication. “Spreading unverified claims only adds to the trauma of those involved. We encourage responsible journalism to ensure the truth prevails.”
As the investigation and legal proceedings continue, the Cross River State Police Command has promised to provide further updates, particularly regarding the health and recovery of the surviving victims.
