Nigerian pharmacists have responded to viral claims by a popular religious leader who labeled fluoride as poisonous and cancer-causing. In a statement, the Association of Community Pharmacists of Nigeria (ACPN) said the remarks were not scientifically accurate.
“We respect the pastor’s spiritual authority but must clarify that his fluoride claims don’t align with science,” said ACPN leaders Ambrose Ezeh and Omokhafe Ashore.
The ACPN explained that fluoride is safe and effective when used in regulated amounts. It helps strengthen tooth enamel and prevent cavities, especially in toothpaste.
They acknowledged that some studies link fluoride to health risks, but only in cases of overexposure. Everyday use, as approved by health agencies, does not pose harm.
“Like any drug, fluoride can be harmful in excess but it’s safe when used properly.”
- Cow’s milk contains little or no fluoride.
- Plant-based milk may have trace amounts, which are only risky in excessive quantities.
- Natural fluoride exists in water, soil, fish, fruits, and even breast milk.
Fluoride issues like dental or bone fluorosis typically result from long-term misuse, not normal use.
The ACPN highlighted age-based recommendations:
- Adults: 3.7–4.5mg/day
- Children: 0.7–1.3mg/day
They advised parents to monitor kids and ensure they don’t swallow toothpaste.
While research into fluoride alternatives is ongoing, the ACPN said there’s no credible evidence linking fluoride toothpaste or foods to cancer. They urged the public to trust verified health information and avoid misinformation.
