Nigeria’s First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, has officially declared the 2025 African Women’s Volleyball Inter-Club Championship open, calling on participants to embody the spirit of true sportsmanship and unity throughout the tournament.
Speaking at the opening ceremony held at the Moshood Abiola National Stadium in Abuja, the First Lady also the Grand Patron of the championship commended the athletes for their dedication, resilience, and representation of African excellence in women’s sports.
“I sincerely thank the African Volleyball Confederation for choosing Nigeria to host this prestigious tournament,” said Mrs. Tinubu. “Your confidence in our nation reflects our growing status as a top destination for international sporting events.”
She lauded the female athletes as powerful symbols of African womanhood and empowerment, highlighting their boldness in challenging gender limitations and showcasing elite-level talent on the volleyball court.
“These remarkable women represent not just their nations, but the limitless potential of African women. Their skills and determination are an inspiration to countless girls across the continent,” she added.
Empowering Women Through Sport
Mrs. Tinubu emphasized the ongoing reforms under President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, which aims to enhance women’s participation across governance, economics, and society at large.
“As you compete, remember that you are more than athletes—you are ambassadors of strength, discipline, leadership, and perseverance,” she told the players. “These life skills will remain with you long after the tournament ends.”
She further encouraged all participants to embrace both victory and defeat with dignity and grace. “In the end, everyone is a winner for being part of this celebration of African excellence.”
The First Lady also extended a warm invitation to all guests and participants to explore Abuja’s rich cultural heritage and hospitality, officially declaring the championship open.
Strong Support from National Sports Leaders
Chairman of the National Sports Commission (NSC), Shehu Dikko, applauded the First Lady’s involvement as Grand Patron, acknowledging her critical role in making the championship a success.
“Your leadership and advocacy for women in sports continue to inspire future generations,” Dikko said. He also praised the Nigeria Customs Service and the NSC for ensuring smooth logistics throughout the event.
Bashir Adeniyi, Comptroller-General of the Nigeria Customs Service, described the tournament as a powerful display of resilience, commitment, and excellence by African women.
“These athletes have overcome significant obstacles to be here today. Their presence is a testimony to turning challenges into triumphs,” he noted. He also expressed appreciation to Mrs. Tinubu for championing gender inclusivity and development.
Celebrating African Volleyball Excellence
President of the Confederation of African Volleyball (CAVB), Bouchra Hajij, celebrated the launch of the 29th edition of the championship as a major milestone in the growth of African women’s volleyball.
“This tournament brings together the best volleyball clubs on the continent, creating a high-level platform for competition, unity, and excellence,” Hajij said.
