As the world marks International Women’s Day (IWD) 2025. Stakeholders in Nigeria are calling for greater representation of rural women in decision-making spaces.
The Nigeria Association of Women Journalists (NAWOJ), FCT Chapter. In collaboration with the Wives of FCT Traditional Rulers Association, hosted an event in Abuja. This event was to address the challenges rural women face and advocate for their inclusion in governance and policy-making.
The theme, “Accelerate Action: Amplifying the Voices of Rural Women,” highlights the critical role rural women play in national development. Also the an urgent need for their participation in leadership and policy formulation.
Empowering Rural Women for National Growth: Mrs. Bassey Ita-Ikpang, chairperson of NAWOJ FCT. Emphasized that empowering rural women benefits the entire nation. She urged for greater support to help them assert their rights and participate actively in governance.
The Role of the Media: Ita-Ikpang also stressed the importance of media coverage in bringing attention to the struggles and contributions of rural women.
Traditional Leaders’ Perspective: Mr. Luka Nizasaan III, Etsu of Kwali, acknowledged the contributions of rural women to family welfare, local economies, and food security. However, he noted that despite their efforts, they often remain unheard and underserved.
Education and Digital Empowerment: Nizasaan emphasized that access to education and digital skills is essential to creating more opportunities for rural women and ensuring their active participation in economic and policy discussions.
Strength in Unity: Ms. Grace Ike, Chairman of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Abuja Council. Called for collective action among women to drive meaningful change. She encouraged women to continue raising their voices and working together to create lasting impact.
As part of efforts to uplift rural women, two beneficiaries received N50,000 each in financial support. This was in reinforcing the commitment to their economic empowerment.
The Path Forward
The event served as a strong call to action for policymakers, civil society organizations, and the media. To prioritize the inclusion of rural women in governance and economic opportunities. Stakeholders emphasized that beyond acknowledging their contributions, concrete steps must be taken to ensure their voices are heard and their rights protected.
