The Super Eagles have intensified preparations for their upcoming 2026 World Cup qualifier against Zimbabwe, with head coach Eric Chelle emphasizing the need for maximum focus. The team resumed training behind closed doors on Sunday in Uyo, aiming to build on their recent 2-0 victory over Rwanda.
Super Eagles’ Closed-Door Training in Uyo
After securing a crucial win against Rwanda last Friday, the team traveled directly from Kigali to Uyo on a chartered Valujet flight. Upon arrival, they began training at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium, with limited media access as part of the coach’s strategy to maintain full concentration.
Team media officer Promise Efoghe confirmed that Sunday’s session was entirely closed to journalists and visitors. Monday’s training will allow brief media access for 15 minutes, following an official press conference. Additionally, there will be opportunities for player interviews in the mixed zone on match day.
Chelle Stresses Importance of Zimbabwe Match
Despite their victory over Rwanda, Chelle remains focused on continuous improvement. He underlined the importance of the upcoming game against Zimbabwe, who previously held Nigeria to a goalless draw in the first leg.
“We need to be fully prepared for this match. My focus is on improving our performance rather than analyzing the opponent’s weaknesses,” Chelle stated after the win in Kigali.
The Super Eagles will have two full training sessions before their crucial game against Zimbabwe on Tuesday. Meanwhile, Zimbabwe also commenced training at the same venue on Sunday, highlighting the intensity of preparations from both teams.
Nigeria’s World Cup Qualification Hopes
With their recent victory, Nigeria’s chances of qualifying for the 2026 World Cup have been revived. However, they currently sit fourth in Group C with six points from five matches, trailing South Africa, Benin Republic, and Rwanda.
